Plate No. 03 What you are building
Bunk bed plans for a wood bunk bed in two sizes, twin over twin and twin over full, each with a storage stair that has seven drawers in the steps and a guarded handrail side, or a ladder instead. Dimensioned drawings, a cut list for every piece and a computed materials list, with guard rails on all four sides of the top bunk.
The build: four 4x4 posts, a lower and an upper deck on 2x8 rails with 2x4 slats and plywood, guard rails on all four sides of the top bunk with every opening 3-1/4 in or less, and one 14 in entry opening. The storage stair has eight steps and seven drawers in the risers; the ladder option has five rungs. Sizes: twin over twin (twin mattresses, 6 ft 1 in tall) and twin over full (full mattress below, twin above with a landing strip). Mattresses up to 8 in thick, top guard rail 7 in above an 8 in mattress. Every member (slats, rails, posts, guard, stair treads) is checked against a stated load.

Is there an easy way to make bunk beds?
The simplest reliable approach is four 4x4 posts with rails bolted between them, a slatted or plywood deck at each level and full guard rails on the top bunk. These plans use that layout, with a ladder or a storage staircase, and the guard and fit checks for your mattress and ceiling height.
This is a digital download, no physical item ships. These are generic DIY plans, not engineered or stamped drawings, and the bed has not been tested or certified to any standard. The top bunk is not for children under 6. Follow every safety rule in the plans, check your local rules, anchor the bed to the wall, and check it every month. The builder is responsible for safe construction and use. Colors can look a little different on your screen and printer. For personal use only; please do not resell or share the files.
