Crate and Barrel Dupe Nightstand: Solid Wood Bedside Tables for Less

A Crate and Barrel dupe nightstand guide: what gives the look, seven Amazon bedside table lookalikes in solid wood, and a related low platform bed build.

The Low Platform Bed, built from DIYDupe plans

A Crate and Barrel dupe nightstand is a bedside table that copies the parts of the retailer’s bedroom look you notice from the pillow: a clean wooden box, a drawer that glides, a warm finish and legs that give the piece some air. The category is crowded with tables that photograph well and fall apart quickly, so this guide focuses on how to tell the difference. It covers what makes the style read as expensive, how to read a listing, and which Amazon lookalikes are worth a closer look. It also points to a related build, with an honest note on how related it is.

We name Crate and Barrel only to describe a style. The nightstands below are lookalikes, not copies, and they differ from the originals in wood, joinery and hardware. We point out the differences as we go.

What makes a Crate and Barrel nightstand look the part

Four traits do most of the work, and they are the traits to match.

A simple, honest box. The look is a rectangle with a drawer or two, a shelf below and nothing applied for decoration. Carved details, heavy hardware and faux distressing push a nightstand toward rustic or traditional.

Real wood tone. The style favors oak, walnut and softly stained finishes where the grain shows. A uniform dark stain or a high-gloss surface hides the grain, and the table starts to look like furniture-store stock.

Visible legs and a sense of lift. Tapered or straight legs a few inches high make a bedside table feel lighter, and they let a vacuum pass underneath. A table that sits flat on the floor feels heavier.

A drawer that closes properly. Dovetail corners, full-extension slides and a flush front show care. These are details you notice every night, so they matter more than they appear to in a photo.

How to judge a nightstand lookalike before you buy

Listings blur several materials together. A short checklist helps.

  • Solid wood or engineered board. The words “solid wood” should name a species or at least a wood family. Veneer over MDF is common, can look good and suits a bedroom, but it chips at the edges and does not refinish well.
  • Drawer construction. Look for the slide type and the drawer corner joint. Stapled corners and plastic runners are the first parts to fail.
  • Height against the mattress. A nightstand sits comfortably when the top is within a few inches of the mattress surface. Measure your bed, then compare.
  • Width and clearance. Allow room for the bed to be pulled out and for a door or window to swing.
  • Set of two or single. Many listings sell a pair, which is useful if you want matching tables and lowers the cost per piece.
  • Assembly. Fully assembled tables are heavier to ship. Flat-pack tables need a screwdriver and an hour. Check which you are buying.
  • Charging and cord management. A built-in outlet or a cutout is useful, but it adds parts that can fail.

The picks below were chosen on how closely the described materials and proportions match the quiet, wood-forward look. Descriptions follow the listing titles and features as we read them. Confirm dimensions, finish and what is included before you decide.

Cuzobro solid wood nightstands set of two

A pair of fully assembled solid wood nightstands, each with two drawers and an open shelf, according to the title. The open shelf is the feature that most echoes the style, giving you a place for a book and a lamp. The listing names a charging feature as well. Check the finish tone against your bed, since a warm stain suits some rooms and clashes with others.

Mid-century solid wood nightstand set of two with sliding shelf

A pre-assembled set of two solid wood nightstands with two drawers and an open sliding shelf, in a mid-century shape. The mid-century silhouette is the closest match to the lifted look of the originals. A sliding shelf is unusual and useful, but it adds a moving part, so it is worth reading the listing for the slide details.

Solid wood bookshelf and nightstand combo in walnut

A taller nightstand that combines drawers with a bookshelf, in a walnut tone, according to the title. It suits a bedroom with limited floor space, since it stacks storage vertically. The look is less restrained than a simple box, so it reads as storage first and bedside table second.

Nathan James Hayes solid wood nightstand with glass top

A solid wood bedside table in a light brown finish with a glass top and an open storage shelf, as described. The glass top is a departure from the all-wood originals, and it changes the character: lighter and more modern. It is a good option for a small room that needs less visual weight.

Winsome curved wood end table and nightstand with one drawer

A small wood table with a curved front and a single drawer, listed in a brown finish. The curve softens a room full of right angles. It is a compact table, so it suits a narrow bedroom or a spare room, and a person who keeps a lot on the bedside will find it small.

Kate and Laurel Kato floating wood side table with drawer

A wall-mounted nightstand with a drawer, in a walnut brown finish. Floating tables suit the clean, lifted look and keep the floor clear. Mounting is the catch: the table needs to be anchored into studs or appropriate anchors, and the weight capacity of the wall matters. The listing is a good one to read for the hardware.

homary floating wooden nightstands set of two with light and charging

A pair of wall-mounted wood nightstands with a drawer, a light and a wireless charging station, according to the listing title. The built-in extras are the selling point, and also the part that adds complexity. If you want a plain wooden look, a simpler table might serve you better.

Build it instead

We do not sell a plan for a standalone nightstand, so no plan here is a direct match. One of our plans includes a bedside element, and it is a closer relative than most.

The Low Platform Bed plans describe a low, Japanese-inspired solid wood platform bed in twin, full, queen, king and California king, built from standard 2x4, 2x6 and 1x4 lumber. The tall headboard of vertical slats has optional nightstand ledges at both ends, which gives you bedside surfaces built into the bed rather than a separate table. Materials for the queen are estimated at about $510 to $730, with the mattress bought separately. Comparable finished solid wood platform beds are listed at about $399 to $1,799 in our plan research.

Be clear about what this is. It is a bed with built-in ledges, not a freestanding nightstand with a drawer. If you want the look of a matched pair of tables beside a bed, a lookalike from the list above is the right answer, and the platform bed is a way to build the bed they sit beside.

These are generic DIY plans, not engineered drawings, and materials figures are planning estimates at typical home-center prices that vary by region. The cart takes 10 percent off when you buy two plans and 25 percent off when you buy three or more. The Complete Collection is $129. Our platform bed frame guide and platform bed cost breakdown cover the build in more detail.

Buy or build

Buy a nightstand when you need a matched pair, a drawer that runs well and a finish you do not have to produce. Furniture-making in miniature is harder than it looks, because drawers need accurate joinery and slides.

Build the bed if you want a custom width and a solid wood frame, and treat the nightstands as a separate purchase.

A short checklist before you click

  1. Measure the mattress height, then compare with the nightstand top.
  2. Decide between a pair and a single table.
  3. Read the material line for solid wood versus engineered board.
  4. Check the drawer slides and corner joint.
  5. Match the finish tone to the floor and the bed.
  6. For floating tables, plan the wall anchors before you buy.
