Restoration Hardware Dupe Coffee Table: Chunky Wood Looks for Less
A Restoration Hardware dupe coffee table guide: what gives the RH look, seven Amazon lookalikes in thick wood, and how to build a similar table yourself.
A Restoration Hardware dupe coffee table is a lookalike for the heavy, architectural tables that RH made its name on: thick reclaimed or weathered wood, chunky block or plinth bases, and a surface big enough to anchor a whole seating group. People search it as “rh dupe coffee table”, “restoration hardware dupe coffee table” and “diy restoration hardware coffee table”, and the three searches point at the same idea. They want mass, texture and calm, without the price of a showroom piece. This guide explains what makes the look, how to read a listing for a lookalike, which Amazon options are worth a closer read and how to build a similar table yourself.
RH (Restoration Hardware) is a retailer, and we name it only to describe a style. The tables below are lookalikes, not copies, and each one differs from the originals in scale, material or finish. We point out the differences as we go.
What makes a Restoration Hardware coffee table look like RH
Five traits do most of the work.
Mass. RH tables look heavy. The top is thick, often 3 in or more, the legs or base are blocky, and the whole piece looks as if it would take two people to move. A lookalike with a thin top and spindly legs loses the effect in seconds.
Weathered, textured wood. The finish tends toward gray-brown, driftwood, oiled oak or reclaimed elm, with visible grain, cracks and knots. The surface feels worn in rather than polished. A smooth, orange-toned surface looks like standard furniture-store stock.
Large scale. Tables are long and wide, often 48 to 60 in or more, and they hold a room together. A coffee table that is too small for the sofa looks timid. A common rule of thumb is a table about two thirds the length of the sofa.
Simple, geometric forms. Rectangles, squares, plinths and cubes. Curves are rare, and hardware is hidden.
Restraint in color. The palette sits in gray, taupe, bleached oak and charcoal. Warm cherry or red tones pull a piece out of the style.
How to judge a lookalike before you buy
Listings are full of impressive words, so read them like a spec sheet.
- Top thickness. Look for a stated thickness. The style depends on a visibly thick edge, and a top described by weight and size but not thickness is a warning.
- Solid wood or wood-look. “Solid wood” should name a species such as elm, oak, acacia or pine. “Wood grain” or “wood finish” often means a printed surface over engineered board.
- Reclaimed claims. Reclaimed wood is often sold as a look, not as a certified source. A listing that says “reclaimed style” is describing a finish.
- Base construction. Block legs and plinths are strong when glued or bolted properly. Check whether the base is solid or a hollow box.
- Weight and shipping. Heavy tables are a good sign, but they are also awkward to move. Check the delivery details and the product weight.
- Edge details. Soft, slightly rounded edges look right on this style and are also kinder to shins.
Restoration Hardware dupe coffee tables on Amazon
The picks below were chosen on how closely the described materials and proportions match the heavy, wood-forward RH look. Descriptions follow the listing titles and features as we read them. Confirm dimensions, thickness and finish on the listing before you decide.
Jennifer Taylor Home Calder 60 inch reclaimed elm plinth coffee table
A large rectangular plinth table in solid reclaimed elm with a heritage medium-dark finish, as described in the title. A plinth base and a 60 in length are the right ingredients for the RH look. Reclaimed elm has genuine character in the grain, though no two tables look the same and the tone is darker than the weathered gray of some originals.
REYOUNG Japandi solid wood coffee table with dual block pedestals
A rectangular platform table in solid wood on two block pedestals, with a natural matte finish, according to the listing. The dual block base is the strongest match for the chunky architecture of the style. The Japandi label means the tone is lighter and calmer, so it reads quieter than a heavily weathered original.
47 inch solid wood coffee table with extra-thick top and block legs
A solid wood table with a natural grain, an extra-thick rectangular top and sturdy block legs, in a rustic modern style, as described. It is the most direct translation of the heavy top and block leg idea in this list. As with any listing that does not name a brand, read the details closely to confirm the wood species and the thickness.
COZAYH modern farmhouse wood block coffee table
A square, chunky table with a cubic base in a rustic modern style. The block shape is a clean copy of the cube forms that RH favors. Because it is a square table, it suits a small group of chairs or a sectional corner better than a long sofa.
Natural oak coffee table with extra thick honeycomb top
A 47 in table with a 1.6 in honeycomb top in natural oak, modern industrial in shape, according to the title. A honeycomb core is a way to make a thick top that is not very heavy, which also means it is not solid wood throughout. It looks thick and is easier to carry, but it will not feel as substantial as a solid slab.
WDYLWFHW 31.5 inch square solid wood coffee table with open storage base
A square table in an antique natural finish with a thick top and a two-tier open base. The open shelf is useful for baskets and books. The style is more rustic and less minimal than the strictest RH tables, but the thick top and warm natural tone are in the right family.
Henn and Hart 32 inch Scandinavian round pedestal coffee table in weathered gray
A round pedestal table in a weathered gray finish, according to the title. The weathered gray tone is the closest color match to the driftwood look in this list. A round table suits a tight room and breaks up a set of right angles, though it is a smaller scale than the large rectangles that define the style.
Build it instead
A coffee table is a forgiving project, and the RH look is mostly thick boards and a good finish. We do not sell a plan named for a coffee table, but two of our plans cover the same techniques and a related look.
The Farmhouse Console plans describe a thick-topped console on square 4x4 legs, with a slatted lower shelf and a two-board top of 2x8s laid flat, in 48, 60 and 72 in lengths. Materials for the 60 in size are estimated at about $140 to $200, and comparable finished 60 in wood console tables are listed at about $599 to $5,330 in our plan research. The thick top and heavy legs are the same ingredients as the RH coffee table, and builders often adapt the construction to a lower height. That adaptation is yours to make, since the plans are written for a console, not a coffee table.
The Coastal Platform Sofa plans include a matching 48 x 24 x 14 in low slatted coffee table, which is a true coffee table build. Materials for it are estimated at about $90 to $120. It is slatted and outdoor-oriented, so it is a different character than a solid block table, but it is a complete coffee table plan.
These are generic DIY plans, not engineered drawings, and materials figures are planning estimates at typical home-center prices that vary by region. The cart takes 10 percent off when you buy two plans and 25 percent off when you buy three or more. The Complete Collection is $129. Our guide to making pine look like white oak covers the finishing side, and the weathered teak look article explains how to age a surface.
Buy or build
Buy when the table is a one-off, you need it this week or you want a particular reclaimed slab that you cannot source yourself. A lookalike from the list above is a reasonable answer.
Build when you want a specific size, a thick top and a finish you control. A top made from glued 2x8s, sanded flat and finished with a gray wash can look like it came from a showroom. The cost of building is time, and the finish takes more of it than the construction.
A short checklist before you click
- Decide the length and height, using the sofa as a guide.
- Look for a stated top thickness.
- Check whether the wood is solid or a printed finish.
- Match the tone to your floor so the table does not fight it.
- Check the base construction and how it attaches.
- Plan how two people will move it into the room.
